Nidra & Swapna

Ayurveda recognizes Nidra (Sleep) as fundamental need of human being to maintain physical as well as mental health. Due to which body gets relaxed is called Nidra. When mind gets tired, when sense organs and motor organs get exhausted they no more can perceive their objects and then sense organs cannot conjugate with their objects and this fatigue of mind and sense organs leads to sleep. Tamas is responsible factor for Nidra. The re experiences of past events during sleep is called swapna.

1. Write effects of day sleep on human body

Ans : Kapha increases
Avarana occurs
causes ama and diseases

•Sleeping during day time removes dryness and creates oiliness in the body.
•Excessive day sleep can produce various disorders in the body due to aggravation of Kapha.

2. Write mechanism of Sleep in ayurvedic perspective.

Ans :

•यदा तु मनसि क्लान्ते कर्मात्मानः क्लमान्विताः |
  विषयेभ्यो निवर्तन्ते तदा स्वपिति मानवः ||   च .सू . २१ /३५
  (मनसीति अन्तःकरणे; किंवा मनोयुक्त आत्मा मन इत्युच्यते, तस्मिन् क्लान्त इति निष्क्रिये| कर्मात्मान इति इन्द्रियाणि| क्लमान्विताः क्रियारहिताः| विषयेभ्यः रूपादिभ्यः| मनसोऽप्रवृत्त्येन्द्रियाण्यपि न प्रवर्तन्त इति भावः| तदा स्वपितीति स्वप्नगुणयुक्तो भवति; स्वप्नश्च निरिन्द्रियप्रदेशे मनोवस्थानम् |  चक्रपाणिदत्त )

3. Write definition & types of Nidra.

Ans :

•निन्द + रक् + तप्,  न लोपः।
•The term ‘Nidra’ is feminine gender. It is derived from the root ‘Dra’ with suffix ‘Ni’ and the root ‘Dra’ means undesired ‘GATU’ to lead, it is a state which is hated, therefore, it is termed as ‘Nidra’.
•देहं विश्रमते यस्मास्तस्मान्निद्रा प्रकीर्तिता।
• अभावप्रत्ययालम्बना वृत्तिर्निद्रा॥१०॥
    पातंजल योगसूत्र समाधिपाद Due to which body gets relaxed is called Nidra
Types of Nidra according to Sushrut :
Tamasi - Nothing is perceived like one in   coma, due to          serious problem  2) Swabaviki – 3 types  
•Tamobhuyishtha – when person sleeps for day and night
•Rajobhuyishtha –   when persons sleeps anytime  without  any                 regulation (in day or night)
•Satvabhuyishtha  - when person sleeps only because his satva   is little  lower side due to continuous   usage, sleeps at midnight & it is called   satvabhuyishtha
3) Vaikariki     Due to less quantity of Kapha dosha and excess quantity of vata dosha , due to increased body temperature and anger
Types of Nidra according to Charak :1.Tamobhava – due to excess tamas
2.Shleshma samudbhava – Excess of Kapha
3.Sharir – Mana – shrama sambhava – Mental and    physical fatigue
4.Agantuki – Adventitious
5.Vyadhi – anuvartini – sequel to diseases
6.Ratri swabhava – prabhava – occuring during night
Types of Nidra according to Ashtanghridaya  :
•अतियोगरुपा -   more hours and more times in a   day
•मिथ्यायोगरुपा -  untimely
•हिनयोगरुपा  -   no slept properly
•सम्यकयोगरुपा  -  timely slept (Sukhayushi)
Types of Nidra according to Ashtangsangraha :
•कालस्वभावामयचित्तदेह-  खेदैः कफागन्तुतमोभवा च|
निद्रा बिभर्ति प्रथमा शरीरं 
पाप्माऽन्तगाव्याधिनिमित्तमन्याः||     अ. सं. सू. ९ / ४९
•Kala Swabhava
•Amayaja
•Chittakhedodbhava
•Dehakhedodbhava
•Kaphodbhava
•Aagantubhava
Tamobhava 

4. Write definition & types of Swapna

Ans :

•  पूर्वदेहानुभूतांस्तु भूतात्मा स्वपतः प्रभुः |
       
रजोयुक्तेन मनसा गृह्णात्यर्थाञ् शुभाशुभान् ||
     सु. शा. ४/३६
•During sleep mind is in active state while body is in inactive state, sense organs cannot perceive knowledge. Active mind with the help of rajas guna and memory, re experiences the past events during sleep.
•This re experiences of past events during sleep.
•This re experiences of past events during sleep is called swapna.

Drishta  Dreams of Visual Experiences
Shruta Dreams of auditory experiences
Anubhuta Dreams of other experiences
Prarthita Dreams of strong desire
Kalpita Dreams of imagination
Bhavika Dreams of future consequences
Doshaja Dreams due to aggravation of doshas

5. Explain relation between prakriti & Swapna

Ans : Vata Dreams about flying in the sky climbing the tree, tracking Pitta Dreams about gold, lightening, fire etc.
Kapha Dreams about lotus, water, lakes, clouds etc.
