Each and every substance is endowed with certain properties. Separate existence of properties is not possible. Various Dravya s are used for preventive, promotive and curative purpose in Aayurveda. It may be either in the form of Medicine or in the form of diet. Selection of any medicine/ diet is based on its properties. One has to study the properties of a Dravya to understand its effects on the body. Concept of guna plays an important role while selecting or rejecting a particular Dravya . Thorough study of this concept is needed for every physician to succeed in the medical practice. Concept of guna cannot be studied without the concept of Dravya .Here Dravya is primary and the properties (guna) becomes secondary. ‘gauna’ word indicates that the guna-s are secondary to Dravya , hence they are termed as guna .
